This Week's Puzzler

Seedlings

This week's puzzler is an old one. I had to adapt this and make it shorter, so keep that in mind.

Here it is.

This fellow goes and buys himself a new house and he moves in before they have an opportunity to do any landscaping. So basically what he has is this beautiful house sitting on this lot with no grass.

And then he decides that his daughter's wedding is going to be at the house. But he didn't want to have the wedding on a bare dirt lot without grass.

So, he needs a lawn, really fast. But he can't afford to have the landscapers bring in sod for the whole lot. So he goes to the nursery and they tell him there's this new genetically engineered grass seed. And this stuff is so amazing, it doubles every day.

The guy at the nursery asks him how many square feet he had on the lot that needs grass. So, he tells the guy. And the salesman does some math and then says, "Okay, if you buy one seedling of this stuff, and plant it in the middle of your lot, in 30 days, you should have a complete lawn of grass."

So, the fellow says, "Well, the wedding is in two weeks, 15 days. So sell me two seedlings."

This guy figures, if one seedling will fill up the whole lawn in 30 days, then two seedlings will do the job in 15 days. This is his theory.

So the puzzler today is, is he right about this? Will this work?

Good luck.

The Importance of Pantyhose

This one is short. And historic. And also automotive.
So, hopefully, you like this one.

Here it is.

Some years ago, there was a natural disaster in the United States that took human life and destroyed considerable property. The effects of this catastrophe were experienced by people hundreds of miles away from the devastation site.

Because of this disaster, motor vehicles became inoperable.

However, people who went out and bought pantyhose were able to continue driving.

So, the puzzler is this.

What was the disaster and why did women's hosiery become important?

The Importance of Pantyhose

Okay puzzler time everyone.

The Scratches

This puzzler today was sent in years ago by a listener in California.

Here it is.

"This tale starts on Halloween night in the town of Soda Springs near Donner Summit in the Sierra Nevada. As we got in the car to go to a Halloween party, the windshield was coated with a fairly thick layer of ice. We could not find an ice scraper, so a friend of ours grabbed an empty aluminum soda can and then used the unpainted bottom to scrape off the ice.

So, he is holding the can as you would drink it, except he is using it to get the ice off the windshield, rubbing it across the surface a bunch of times.

So then, off we went to the Halloween party without a worry about the windshield because we knew that aluminum is softer than glass. We thought that the only thing that could scratch glass was a diamond. I think we have all heard that before.

So the next afternoon we go to the car and to our dismay we find a bunch of deep scratches in the windshield.

When we got home we looked up the hardness values for aluminum in the CRC Handbook for Chemistry and Physics. So we looked it up and sure enough, aluminum is considerably softer than glass on the Mohs Hardness Scale. So it stands to reason that no scratches should have appeared on the windshield."

And the puzzler is, why were there scratches on the windshield?
