This Week's Puzzler

The Boat That Wouldn't Start

Time for the puzzler.

Here it is.

In a small town, out by the sea, in a land far, far away...

In this small down, there was a marina where they stored and launched boats with an overhead crane.

The marina had a repair shop with about five mechanics, parts department and a new and used boat sales department.

One day, a customer used his inboard boat for water skiing and left it parked at the dock overnight.

He came in to use it the next morning, and the battery was dead.

He had left his running lights on.

So the head mechanic pulls the battery out and takes it to the shop for a quick charge.

A while later, they take the battery back to the boat, they put it in and try to start it.

The starter spins up, you can hear the motor turn, but it doesn't engage the flywheel.

It started fine several times just the day before, but would not start now.

They pull the starter off figuring that the starter is no good.

They put the starter on the bench in the shop, and everything looked okay. In fact, they tested it, and it started right up. It worked perfectly.

So they put it back in the boat again. It spins up, but doesn't engage the flywheel.

An hour later, they figure out the problem. Then they fix it.

There was nothing wrong with the motor, there was nothing wrong with the engine, and there was nothing wrong with the battery.

So, what was the problem?

Good luck.

Brother Tow

Puzzler time.

Here it is.

This guy is driving his car home from work late one night, and the car breaks down.

He lives somewhere in New Jersey.

He calls his brother and says, "I need help. My car broke down. You have to come rescue me."

So the brother shows up, many hours later, in his car and they assess the situation.

The first guy says, "Okay, are you ready to help me?"

And his brother says, "I can't tow your car back home."

And the first guy says, "That's okay. I will tow you back home."

So the guy who broke down is gonna tow his brother, the guy who came to help him.

How could that be?

No Tracks in the Sand

Here it is.

Two hikers are crossing the desert. It is the early morning.

They come across a suitcase in the sand that is partially open with clothing strewn about. But interestingly, they see no tracks of any kind surrounding it.

They continue on their journey, heading for the oasis to get water.

So they move on, and then they find another suitcase in the sand, and the same thing... It's open and clothes are strewn about it. No tracks or anything surrounding it.

They come across a camera in the sand, same thing, no tracks or anything. Then a video camera.

A little while later, they find shoes, hats, pants, shirts.

They continue on their journey.

A little distance later, they see a man lying face down in the sand grasping a piece of straw. He is obviously dead.

Can you figure out what happened? What's the most likely scenario?
