This Week's Puzzler

The Mechanic Shrug

Okay, time for the new puzzler. This one will be a little better this time. This one is from a long time ago.

A while back, we used to have all these trade magazines in the garage. And just recently I was reading one of these old motor magazines and I was reminded of something that happened back in the garage back then that would make a great puzzler.

So, a customer came in with a 1985 Honda Accord. He wants a tune up. So we do the tune up. And after paying the bill, he leaves happy.

He comes back about a week or two later, saying, "Jeeze guys, I hate to complain but since the tune up, my car runs lousy first thing in the morning. Especially on cold mornings, and the colder it is, the worse it runs. I think maybe you all did something wrong."

So we all look at each other and do the mechanic shrug... So he leaves the car with us. And we just pour over it. We checked everything. We check the timing, we check the operation of the choke, and we can't find anything wrong with it at all.

So we give the car back. He drives it another week and then comes back and says, "Guys, I hate to say this, but it is not any better. In fact, now that the weather is getting even colder, it's even worse."

So we took the car back and parked it in the corner of the garage. Then one of my guys walked over to it and said, "Oh, I know what's wrong..."

Then, he replaced the air filter. Now, we had already replaced the air filter when we did the tune up. But he replaced it again.

Then he calls the guy and says, "Your car is all fixed." And he didn't even test it. And sure enough, the car was fixed.

So, here is the puzzler, how could replacing the air filter a second time have solved the issue? And I should mention, that the first air filter was not defective at all.

Good luck.

The Fun One

Okay, this puzzler is for the kiddos. Adults can help out, as always.

This is a made up fun puzzler. Here we go.

Using the most powerful telescope ever made, let's call it the Bubble Telescope, just for fun, scientists happen to observe a class of young aliens on a planet millions of light-years away.

So, they look through the telescope and they see aliens in a classroom, millions of light-years away. So, this alien classroom has teachers and students. And on the chalkboard, the scientists can see the following equations are written.

13 + 15 = 31

10 x 10 = 100

6 x 3 = 24

And the question is, how many fingers do these aliens have?

I know this one is silly, but it's fun.

The Checkerboard

Imagine you have a checkerboard. A big square checkerboard. Standard type.

So, it is 8 squares by 8 squares and they alternate in color from black to red and black to red, and so on.  And 8 times 8 is 64, so there are 64 squares total.

So now, imagine that you have a bunch of dominoes. Say, 32 dominoes. Each Domino was big enough to cover two squares on the checkerboard. One black square and one red square.

So it's easy to figure out that with the checkerboard having 64 squares, half that number, or 32, would be enough to cover every single square on the checkerboard.

So now, I'm gonna add a little wrinkle to this. Make it not so easy. Let's say you took a saw and you removed the right-hand corner square of the checkerboard. You just cut it off. And you did the same with the one in the left-hand corner. You just cut it right out.

So now, you have a checkerboard with 62 squares, because you just cut out two of them. The two are diagonally across from either other on the board. One black square and one red square.

Here is the puzzler.

Explain in three sentences or less, how you would arrange the dominoes now to cover all the squares, knowing that each domino must cover one red square and one black square. You can use as many as you need, but they can't overlap each other.
