This Week's Puzzler

G Washington

It is time for the new puzzler. I have a bunch of crappy puzzlers to choose from today. But I am choosing this one. Don't ask me why.

Here it is.

Many years ago, I was vacationing in upstate New York, and I was in a little sleepy town called Cold Springs.

While I was there, I had occasion to go to an antiques auction. You know a big auction of antiques. That is where they claim to have some rare and priceless antiques, stuff that collectors would really want.

One of the items that comes up is a child's sled, a wooden sled that the auctioneer claims was made by George Washington himself.

The auctioneer turns the thing over and carved into the one of the wooden slats on the back is this:

"G Washington, September 10, 1752."

Now I remember from sixth grade that the square root of 3 was George Washington's birthday. The square root of 3 is 1.732. And George Washington's birthday is in 1732.

So, if this carving on the sled is accurate, that would make him 20 years old at the time. So it stands to reason that at the age of 20, before he started his military career, that he might be making a sled for a niece or nephew or for his own kids. Who knows.

So, I'm ready to bid 20 bucks on the thing, and someone in the crowd pipes up and says, "It's a fake."

He was right. It was a fake. And the puzzler is, how did he know that?

Good luck.

What Didn't Happen

Time for the puzzler. This one was sent in by a listener. Here we go.

This one has to do with baseball. This one is kind of vague. So you gotta really know baseball to get it.

This has to do with an historic baseball game which took place in June of 1997. It was notable, not for what happened that day, but for what didn't happen.

It had nothing to do with the actual playing of the game, so to speak. It was a statistical kind of thing. That is the hint.

That is all I can give you. The puzzler is, what didn't happen in major league baseball in June of 1997?

Dimming Headlights

This one was sent in some time ago. It goes like this.

"I lived for a year doing medical research in Tanzania, East Africa. At my disposal was a blue Mitsubishi Pajero which was called Montero in this region, and a 1981 white Toyota Land Cruiser.

I lived several miles out of town on a long, bumpy dirt road, which became a long muddy dirt road during the rainy season. It was always a challenge to drive. One evening, as I was cruising in the Mitsubishi, I noticed that whenever I let up on the gas pedal, the headlights dimmed. I was forced to keep my foot on the accelerated the entire way into town where my trusty mechanic diagnosed an electrical problem.

A wire had apparently shaken loose, probably from the alternator because of the rough road. The wire was refastened, and the problem was solved.

Not more than two weeks later, I was navigating the road in the other vehicle, the Land Cruiser, when I noticed, much to my dismay, that the headlights were dimming. It was getting dark, and in fear of being stranded out in the middle of nowhere, I accelerated again, wondering whether I had another loose wire. The headlights didn't really seem to respond. But in my anxiety, I wasn't sure.

I was making steady progress toward town, when just as I hit a paved road, I also hit a stationary object and blew out one of my tires.  With a heavy heart I came to a stop, turned the car off, and began to change the flat tire.

During the course of the tire change, I discovered what was wrong with the car and managed to fix it without opening the hood. In fact, I fixed it with the sleeve of my jacket."

And the puzzler is, how did the writer fix the issue with the car?
