This Week's Puzzler

A Hopping Race

Alright, a puzzler from the insect division:

Two grasshoppers are arguing about who’s faster, so they set up a race.

The big one jumps 10 inches per hop.

The little one jumps 6 inches per hop—but jumps more often.

They race a course that’s 12 feet out and 12 feet back.

At certain points (like 5 feet), they’re exactly even.

The question: Can either one win the race… and if so, who?

The Last Man in the Trunk

Alright, an “automotive” puzzler, emphasis on the trunk:

Vinnie Goombatz’s cousins, Rocco and Throckmorton, find themselves locked in the airtight trunk of a car.

Rocco panics, he bangs, yells, and uses up a lot of air.

After a while… he dies.

Throckmorton does the oppositehe stays calm, barely breathes, and waits.

Hours later, he hears someone bang on the trunk and is rescued—still alive.

How could Throckmorton survive for hours after Rocco had already used up all the air?
